A voice of one calling...
"Prepare the way for the LORD
…the glory of the LORD will be revealed, and all mankind together will see it."
Have you ever missed your name being called while in a waiting room? If you missed the announcement, what was the reason? You may have been preoccupied, deep in thought. Or perhaps you stepped out of the room, out of range of the announcement. Have you ever missed your name being called in an airport? There the stakes are higher; missing your name may mean missing a flight. If you missed the announcement, what was the reason? Maybe you were busy with a mental checklist of all the to-do’s on the business trip before you, or you may have already started your vacation, drifting in carefree thought, not at all expecting your name would be called. You naturally play the blame game and fault the announcement; it wasn’t loud enough or clear enough or repeated enough. But the bottom line is that when an announcement is made and you miss it, it’s on you.
People find fault with God for not sufficiently announcing Himself, for not making Himself known. But He has openly announced Himself from the very beginning, and His announcement has continued through the ages. And oh, by the way, He’s calling your name!
God called Abraham and told Him, "All nations will be blessed through you." (Genesis 12:3) And so God made him into a great nation, the nation of Israel. He set Israel on the world stage to be a light to all nations; that’s why the Bible records the history of Israel. Read the Bible and see the wonders He performed in Israel’s history; read the Bible and hear the words He proclaimed through the prophets He sent. None of this was done or said in secret. Through Israel, "The LORD has made His salvation known and revealed His righteousness to the nations." (Psalm 98:2)
All these words and wonders pointed to the ultimate Word and Wonder by which He would make Himself known. When Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary, "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us," and we too through the words of eyewitnesses "have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only who came from the Father, full of grace and truth." (John 1:14) Our salvation was not something God did or said in secret. Born into human history, living on the world stage before the eyes and ears of mankind, Jesus died and rose again to bring us the forgiveness of all our sins and the promise of eternal life. The glory of the LORD has been revealed, and it is still on display for you; His voice is calling you through the pages of the Bible, calling you to repent and rejoice in this great salvation.
So prepare the way for the LORD. Set aside preoccupations and don’t run away from the call of God’s Word. Make your soul’s salvation your business and don’t delude yourself with momentary carefree pleasures. Quit the blame game and listen to the voice of grace and truth which calls you from the dead end of sin and lies to the Way of life everlasting. Listen; He’s calling your name!
