"How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me?" David’s cry in Psalm 13 is the cry of all humanity. You see it all around you, don’t you? And you yourself have been there, haven’t you? Disappointment, brokenness, and loss of purpose crying out. Guilt, shame, failure, futility crying out. Loss of patience and despair crying out. In times of suffering or disappointment, there is a temptation to question everything about God: 'Where’s Your care, Your love, Your presence?' You might even be tempted to declare yourself done with God, this God who seems to do nothing when you need Him the most.
David continues Psalm 13 with a dramatic change in tone. "But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing to the Lord, for He has been good to me." How could he say this?!? His situation hadn’t suddenly changed; his anguish hadn’t ended. But David turned back to what he knew to be true of God – His love, His salvation, His goodness. Knowing that God’s love is unfailing, His salvation sure, and His goodness enduring, knowing what God had proven and promised, David’s heart could be at rest again, and yes, even rejoice. HOLD ON TO GOD’S UNFAILING LOVE. Nowhere do we see His love more clearly than in the One whom David looked forward to in faith, the promised Savior, Jesus Christ.
