How often do you feel like what you do is never enough? The feeling can come from tasks that are left undone, people that are left unsatisfied, and best efforts that just aren’t good enough. You resolve to try harder, and the more you do – the more you try to prove yourself – the more stressed, restless, weary, and burdened you become. Jesus reaches out to you with this invitation: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Matthew 11:28-30) What are you yoked to – that is, what are you attached to that controls you? Put another way, what do you live for? If you are living for anyone or anything other than Jesus, you will never find rest.
To take Jesus’ yoke upon you is to learn from Him. Dig into the gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John and look at all that Jesus said and did. Marvel at the fact that all He said and did purposefully led to the cross. Here is rest for your soul: All that Jesus said and did in His life lived on the way to the cross and His life given at the cross – it was ENOUGH. There He took all that ultimately wearies and burdens you upon Himself, and in doing so it was enough to win forgiveness for all your sins and failings, it was enough to save you from condemnation, it was enough to secure eternal rest for you in heaven. His resurrection from the dead is God's declaration and assurance to you that this was truly enough. All this is enough to free you from the stress of trying to LIVE UP TO something, so you may instead LIVE OUT the peace of knowing Jesus as your Savior. May this grace of God turn your life FROM STRESS TO REST.
