The devil is really good at what he does. "Did God really say…?" That was his first lie, and he continues with it today. With that word "really," he suggests that God can’t be trusted. How often do we fall for that same lie? How often are we skeptical of God when His Word defies popular opinion or His will defies reason? The devil continues his attack on God’s truthfulness, love, and goodness by saying that "God knows" that Eve would supposedly be happier and freer if she defied Him and ate of the forbidden tree. How often are we fooled by that same lie? How often have we trusted the lie that if we believe God completely, we won’t be happy, or that if we obey Him it will cramp our lifestyle? How often have we trusted the lie that God is being unfair to us? Believing the lie that God cannot be trusted, we have often put ourselves in the place of God, grasping after the devil’s original and ongoing deadly lie, "you will be like God." (Genesis 3:1-8)
When these lies prove to be empty, we try to hide from God in fearful shame like Adam and Eve, buying yet another lie, that this is the best course. Is there anything that can conquer the lies in our life? There is. It starts with this: "But the Lord God called to the man, 'Where are you?' " (Genesis 3:9) Do you see God’s grace? We hide, but God seeks. He goes after us because He knows the lies in our life have paralyzed us from going after Him. And then to see that His going after us in grace finds its ultimate expression in Jesus – well, the truth of it smothers all the lies! Consider this: When God said to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, 'Obey me about the tree and you will live,' they didn’t. But when God said to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, 'Obey me about the tree (the cross) and you will die,' He did. He put Himself in our place under God’s judgment on the cross FOR US who have put ourselves in God’s place by trusting the devil’s lies. In doing so, He secured our salvation. You see, God REALLY does have our best interests at heart at all times and in all things. The cross of Christ proves it! May this grace of God turn your life around FROM LIES TO TRUTH.
