It’s a sick feeling. It’s the feeling you get when a loved one dies. It’s the feeling you get when you’ve lost a job or taken a major financial hit and you don’t know what you’re going to do to make ends meet. It’s the feeling you get when someone close to you betrays and abandons you. It’s the feeling you get when you see all the time you’ve wasted, all the resources you’ve squandered, and all the people you’ve failed. The feeling is called "emptiness." It’s the void, the loneliness, the absolute absence of satisfaction in life because of death, disappointment, brokenness.
Jesus knows emptiness. The Son of God "made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant…humbled Himself" (literally: He emptied Himself) "and became obedient to death – even death on a cross." (Philippians 2:6-8) There’s a beauty to this emptiness when you realize why He embraced it: Jesus emptied Himself so that He could fill you with everything you need for a fulfilling life now and forever in heaven. Therefore He was punished for your sins so that you would not be punished; He was forsaken on the cross so that you would not be forsaken; He was condemned so that you would not be condemned. "For your sakes He became poor, so that you through His poverty might become rich." (2 Corinthians 8:9) And there's not a void or a loneliness or a brokenness that Jesus doesn’t fill with the richness of His love, His life, His death, His resurrection, His forgiveness, His promises. "For in Christ all the fullness of God lives in bodily form – and you have been given fullness in Christ." (Colossians 2:9,10) Yes, Jesus Christ knows emptiness, YOUR emptiness, and He wants you to have the fullness that only He gives. Through faith in Him, all of Christ is all of yours. May this overflowing grace of God turn your life FROM EMPTINESS TO FULLNESS.
