Do you know what 'the indelibility of guilt' is? It means it’s always there, imprinted upon your soul. It means that the guilt of sin cannot be removed by anything you do. But we try, don’t we? Oh, do we try! We blame others for our sins. We try to make up for our guilt with acts of kindness. We try to ignore it by immersing ourselves in busyness. We try to deaden it through indulging in pleasures. We try to convince ourselves that as long as nobody else knows, it’s okay. …But none of it works! When King David tried to conceal his guilt of adultery and murder, this is what he experienced: "When I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was sapped as in the heat of summer." (Psalm 32:3,4) This is what guilt does when you try to silently suppress your sin, when you try to hide it, when you try to ignore it, when you try to pretend everything is fine but you know it isn’t.
Do you sense that instead of covering up your sin, you need a covering for your sin? This also is what David experienced: "Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose sin the Lord does not count against him and in whose spirit is no deceit. …Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, 'I will confess my transgressions to the Lord' – and You forgave the guilt of my sin." (Psalm 32:1,2,5) Do you see what God is saying? 'Completely uncover yourself, and I will cover you.' So first, be honest about your sin to the Lord. Stop pretending and deceiving yourself. Stop bargaining, saying to Him, 'I will do better, I will do better,' when you know better isn’t good enough. Simply confess to Him. Stop making excuses. Admit you’re the cause of your sin. Stop holding on to your sins. Hand them over. …God doesn’t want to condemn you; God wants to cover you! It was for this reason that Jesus was stripped, uncovered, left naked on a cross. The very Son of God hung fully exposed with your sin and crushed with your guilt so you in exchange could be covered with His forgiveness and His righteousness. May this liberating grace turn your life around FROM COVERING UP TO COVERED UP, living forgiven through faith in Jesus.
