On coming to the house, they saw the child with His mother Mary,
and they bowed down and worshiped Him.
Then they opened their treasures
and presented Him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.
Name a sight that makes you say "Wow!" What do you see in your mind's eye? Is it a scene from nature: a radiant sunset, an awesome valley view from a mountain top, a towering distant thunderstorm? Is it a work of man: an artistic architectural accomplishment, a dazzling painting that seems alive, a dance performance where the many move as one? Is it more personal: a loving spouse, a child growing up before your eyes, aged parents whose eyes still glisten with tender care for you? Whatever the wow-worthy sight, no one needs to tell you to say "Wow!" - you just do.
Where is the command for these wise men to bow down and worship this child? Where is the command to present Him with gifts fit for a king? Who told them to do this? No one needed to tell them to do so; they saw a wow-worthy sight and with their actions said "Wow!"
It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder; one man's wow-worthy sight may leave another man unimpressed. But there is a beauty that these wise men recognized in this one called Jesus that is meant to draw a "Wow!" from every single person on the face of the earth - past, present, future. For His beauty is that He came to wash away the ugliness of our sin, guilt, and shame. His beauty is that He came to open up Himself as a treasure to us, presenting us with gifts of grace and of forgiveness and of mercy (to name just a few!). His beauty is that in Him, you are beautified as a child of God, beautiful and beloved in His sight, fully forgiven without a spot of sin.
Put a mirror to your heart and take an honest look. Then look upon Jesus as the wise men did. You won't need me telling you to say "Wow!"
King of Creation,
Son of God and Son of Man!
Truly I'd love Thee,
Truly I'd serve Thee,
Light of my soul, my Joy, my Crown.
