We mourn loss. Whether the loss of a loved one, the loss of a relationship, the loss of health, the loss of livelihood, the loss of life the way it was – all these losses and more cause us to mourn. Does anything in life inflict greater loss upon us than sin? All the examples mentioned above are realities that come with life in a sinful world, a world that is fallen and broken world. Loss is to be expected, and it all stems from sin. But that sense of loss and depth of mourning is greater when we recognize that sin isn’t just something outside ourselves that makes a mess of the world; it is a relentless, selfish reality within us that we have no power to escape. At the heart of all the loss mentioned above is helplessness, an inability to change the situation. So it is with our sinful condition.
To you who mourn your sin, Jesus meets you in your grief with the word "blessed" and with the gift of "comfort" to replace your sorrow. A hymn writer put it this way:
When sinners see their lost condition and feel the pressing load of sin,
And Jesus comes on His blest mission to heal the sin-sick heart within,
All grief must flee before His grace, and joy divine will take its place.
"Through Jesus, the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you." (Acts 13:38) Is there any greater comfort? It is a comfort that helps us through all the losses we face in life, for through the forgiveness of sins we have the promise of eternal life in heaven where "there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things [will have] passed away." (Revelation 21:4) Do you see how blessed you are in Jesus? "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO MOURN, FOR THEY WILL BE COMFORTED." (Matthew 5:4)
