Picture yourself in these situations: auditioning for a play; applying for admission into a college; interviewing for a job; proposing marriage. In each case, what are you hoping for? Ultimately you are seeking approval and acceptance. That’s a way of understanding what Jesus means when He speaks of "those who hunger and thirst for righteousness," those who seek a verdict of approval by God, to be accepted by Him. In the situations above, regardless of your effort, you might not get the part or the acceptance or the job or the 'yes.' But there is no 'might' when it comes to gaining God’s approval: NO amount of effort will do; we DON’T have what it takes. The standard is clear: "Whoever keeps the whole law and stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking it all." (James 2:10) The verdict is indisputable: "There is no one righteous, not even one." (Romans 3:10)
Are you now hungering and thirsting for righteousness? How can Jesus say you are "blessed"? How can you be "filled"? Look not to yourself and your efforts but to Jesus Christ alone. In His holy life and innocent death and triumphant resurrection, there is "a righteousness from God, apart from law," apart from anything you can do. "This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe." (Romans 3:21,22) Jesus came to be your righteousness, to give you His righteousness, to fill you with His righteousness so that you lack nothing before the Father. Jesus fills your need for God’s approval! Do you see how blessed you are in Jesus? "BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO HUNGER AND THIRST FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS, FOR THEY WILL BE FILLED." (Matthew 5:6)
