How often do you see the verbs 'slams' and 'blasts' in the headlines? It’s become the common way to handle disagreements nowadays. This isn’t a political statement; this is true of man in every manner of dispute. And it’s nothing new; mankind’s fall into sin in Genesis chapter 3 quickly leads to Cain killing Abel in Genesis chapter 4. What God has warned us of seems all the more evident these days: "If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out, or you will be destroyed by each other." (Galatians 5:15) We sorely need these words from Jesus: "Blessed are the peacemakers." (Matthew 5:9) Peacemaking involves actively working to end animosity, but how often have we instead wounded others with our own bite marks, inciting and inflaming conflicts with insult and insistence of 'my way' and 'my view'?
We need to remember who it is that said, "Blessed are the peacemakers." God wanted nothing but peace for us, but mankind rebelled against Him, and we have done nothing but add fuel to that fire. Amazingly, God did everything to restore peace between Him and mankind. God did this; God – the One who was wronged and rejected! Jesus came as "the Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6), living the perfectly peaceable life we have failed to live. Then He gave His holy life to pay the highest price to resolve our greatest conflict, "by making peace through His blood, shed on the cross" (Colossians 1:20), reconciling us to God. There’s powerful truth in this saying: 'No Jesus, no peace. Know Jesus, know peace.' To know Jesus and His peace shows itself in sowing seeds of this peace, living it with others, proclaiming the peace of forgiveness that we have with God as our Father through faith in His Son. Do you see how blessed you are in Jesus? "BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS, FOR THEY WILL BE CALLED SONS OF GOD." (Matthew 5:9)
