Mercy is costly. That’s probably not what you immediately think of with "mercy," but it’s true, and it’s helpful to understanding what mercy is all about. Mercy shows itself in giving. In one of Jesus’ parables, 'the Good Samaritan' helped a beaten man, bandaged his wounds, took him to an inn, and paid for his care till he was better. (Luke 10:25-37) He saw the pain of the beaten man and took the costly burden upon himself to care for that man. Mercy also shows itself in forgiving. Again, that may not sound costly at first, but forgiveness is always expensive to somebody. It often comes at the cost of our pride or sense of justice. Debt of any kind doesn’t just vanish into thin air. It’s either paid or forgiven. If it is forgiven, it’s absorbed by the one who forgives. Whether it’s giving or forgiving, showing mercy doesn’t come naturally to us. We often give and forgive on the basis of whether we think someone deserves it or not, whether they’re worth the cost. Our mercy is often tainted with judgmentalism.
Now consider the costly mercy of God. At creation God said, 'Let there be,' and there was. But He never says, ‘Let there be forgiveness.’ Instead, He sent his Son to die and take our punishment for sin. Jesus paid the most awful, the most costly price. He drank the cup of suffering for our sin with beatings and scourging, with thorns and nails, with sorrow and death. He took our burden of sin and divine wrath upon Himself; He fully absorbed it for us. "When the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of His mercy." (Titus 3:4,5) His only consideration was not what we deserved, but what we needed. Knowing this mercy leads you to show true mercy to others. In doing so, you really are celebrating God’s mercy and anticipating the mercy to come when you will be with Him forever in heaven – "because of His mercy." Do you see how blessed you are in Jesus? "BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL, FOR THEY WILL BE SHOWN MERCY." (Matthew 5:7)
