Suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host,
praising God and saying,
"Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace,
good will toward men."
Have you ever used the expression, 'It's kind of a big deal'? Truth be told, that assessment is regularly an exaggeration. We have a way of magnifying things in the moment, but today's 'big deal' is often soon forgotten.
But here we are talking about the birth of Jesus more than 2,000 years after the fact. Yeah, that's kind of a big deal! Such a big deal that His birth was praised by a multitude of angels.
And why is this such a big deal that the angel army glorified God?
1) Because the sending of God's one and only Son means "peace on earth." This isn't some fuzzy, feel-good peace that comes and goes with the moment, nor is it a total peace between peoples and nations which the world has never seen. No, this is a peace between God and man, a peace we desperately need, because our sin puts us at war with God. But God initiates peace, sending His Son, sending Him specifically to bear our sins and make peace between us and God. "Peace on earth" - peace to YOU, peace with God, peace through Jesus!
2) Because the sending of God's one and only Son means "good will toward men," toward all mankind. Just as "peace on earth" is often spun as harmony among the nations, so also "good will toward men" is often spun as the 'Christmas spirit' of being nice to each other. As much as mankind needs that, our much greater need is for good will from God. All the niceness in the world cannot save us from the just punishment that our sins against God have earned us. But God comes to us with the gift of His Son proclaiming His good will toward sinful mankind. "Good will toward mankind" - good will to YOU, good will from God Himself, good will through Jesus!
...As you reflect on God's message of peace and good will toward you through our Savior Jesus, doesn't it make you want to join the angels in praising Him? Yes, "Glory to God in the highest!"
