One of Jesus’ best known parables is the one about the prodigal son – the wayward, wasteful son. (Luke 15:11-32) Perhaps it is well known because we can all relate to it. We too have at times wandered from God’s ways and squandered His good gifts. We’ve all had a rebellious streak – and that rebellious streak called sinfulness still lives within us. That’s why it’s so important to see that the central character of this parable is the compassionate father, who joyfully embraced his son with unconditional forgiveness.
I’ll never forget sharing this parable with someone who had struggled with guilt all his life. He dreaded facing God. When he heard about the freely forgiving father, he asked, 'That’s what God is like?' What a joy to tell him that yes indeed, this is a picture of his heavenly Father!
