Hi, this is Daniel from ForgivenFully.com, sharing with you the exclamation point of God’s forgiveness.
‘Christianity is a religion of guilt.’ Have you ever been challenged with that statement? Have you yourself ever had that thought? After all, the Bible regularly talks about God’s commands and our sin. So is it true that Christianity is a religion of guilt?
Think of a visit to a doctor. What do you want from the doctor when you have a dreadful disease: The life-saving truth, or a lie that everything’s fine with you? The doctor can only treat you if he or she can first convince you of your problem. If you’re in denial, the cure is utter nonsense. It can be a painful experience for the doctor to poke and prod and find and treat what’s wrong with you; cancer, for example needs to be irradiated or cut out. But does that mean that a doctor is practitioner of pain? No, of course not; the doctor treats you to cure you; the doctor wants to save you!
God’s commands show us that we have all the symptoms of the deadly disease called sin. Does He show us our sins so that we’ll live life wallowing in guilt? Does a doctor show us our symptoms to make us suffer? Of course not! God shows us our sins so that we understand our desperate need for the cure; if we’re in denial the cure is utter nonsense.
A doctor also explains a disease so that we can understand what measures will have to be taken to save us. In the same way, God explains our disease of sin to us so that we can understand the cure. The cure is not ‘Try harder!’ or ‘Do better!’ Like a cold cloth on a fevered forehead, that would be like trying to treat the symptoms of disobedience instead of the disease of sin itself. God’s cure is this: ‘I sent my Son to lift your disease from you, to take it upon Himself, and to die with it in your place. My Son rose from the dead; He lives so that you can know that your disease has been conquered. Look to Him and know that you are forgiven fully; Jesus is the cure – my cure to your sin, my cure to your guilt.’
So is Christianity a religion of guilt? Ask King David, who had to be confronted with his sins of adultery and murder before he would admit them. David then wrote, “I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord’ – and You forgave the guilt of my sin.” (Psalm 32:5) Christianity is not a religion of guilt; it points to Christ as the remover of your guilt.
