What do these situations have in common? Someone cuts you off in traffic. Your strongly held opinion is challenged. Your spouse doesn’t do what you want. The common result? Anger. What does God have to say about it? "Man’s anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires." (James 1:20) Although there is such a thing as 'righteous anger' against injustices, abuses, and sins, our anger is typically for self-righteous reasons: we don’t get what we want and are inconvenienced. How we react reveals the sinfulness of our anger: judgment, seething, shouting, insults, obscenities, even violence. This is why God says, "Get rid of all bitterness, rage, and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice." (Ephesians 4:31) Yes, there is such a thing as righteous anger, and it is God who is rightly angry with us for our injustices, abuses, and sins against Him and our fellow man.
God poured out His just anger at the cross. Jesus, as our sin-bearer and substitute, cried out, "My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46) This is the agony of the Son of God suffering hell, complete and utter separation from God, the punishment of God’s righteous anger in all its fury – for all our sins. "Christ loved us and gave Himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God." (Ephesians 5:2) This "fragrant offering" means that our sins have been paid for, God’s anger is satisfied, and we have peace with God through faith in Christ. This peace with God affects our relationships with those around us. In this peace of forgiveness, you can "be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children." You can "be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32, 5:1) May this grace of God turn your life FROM ANGER TO PEACE.
